Does your child have difficulty solving word problems? Check out the word problem below,

Solving real-world math problems requires patients and understanding. In order to familiarize students with these kinds of problems, teachers include word problems in their math curriculum. However, word problems can present a real challenge if students don't know how to break them down and find the numbers in the story. There is an art to solving word problems.


Solve :

Janine owns a catering service company. She was hired to cater for the mayor’s 50th birthday. The second food item she has to prepare is soup. She needs 280 cups of mushroom soup. If the first team made 90 cups in 60 minutes, and the third team made 70 cups in 90 minutes, how many cups should the second team prepare in order to meet the required amount of soup?

Hi Mark, I had to edit my question. Yes, there are several strategies that can be used to solve word problems. I am an elementary teacher with over 20+ years of experience and am new to Wyzant.

Diane B.: Is this really a real-life problem? Do your students see that data is given for team 1 and 3 yet the question is about team 2?
