Precal: bearings

Two fire lookout stations are 16 miles apart with station B directly East of station A. Both stations spot a fire on a mountain to the south. The bearing from station A to the fire is S 56°. The bearing from station B to the fire is S23°W. How far, to the nearest tenth of a mile is the is the fire from station A.

Mark M.

Bearing is measured from true North. Therefore the fire cannot be to the south and have a bearing of 56 degrees from A. Review the post for accuracy.

Based on the definition of bearing shown at the following location, what is likely missing is the E/W component from station A, as in S56E. desmos.com/calculator/vnnvjyyfu1

Draw and label a diagram! include all angle measures. Then use Law of Sines to determine distance of the fire from A.
