asked 09/24/22Use the equations for the total cost C and total revenue R to find the number x of units a company must sell to break even. (Round to the nearest whole unit.) C = 9.3 sqroot x + 15,000, R = 5.29x

Math, microeconomics or criminal justice
set C=R
9,3sqrx +1500 = 5.29x
isolate the square root term then square both sides
9,3^2(x)= (5,29x-1500)^2
86.49x= 27.9841x^2 -15870x+2250000
27.9841x^2 -15,783.51x +2,250,000 = 0
use the quadratic formula
x=(-b+/- sqr(b^2-4ac))/2a
x= [15783.51 +/- sqr(15783.51^2 -4(2,798.41)(2.250,000)]/2(27.9841)
x= about 314.74
x= about 315
put the equation into a graphing calculator, it shows an x intercept of about 315
but if you really meant 15,000 as fixed cost then
the solution is imaginary, i,e there is no breakeven point
when the discriminant of the quadratic is negative, there is no real solution.
for a financial/economics problem you need a real solution, not imaginary (unless you're preparing the US budget to explain how you're breaking even in an imaginary world)
whatever the actual problem, the above is the general method to solve it.
