Derivatives Lesson

Can somebody please introduce me to derivatives and explain them fully and how to solve them? Please include all the formulas necessary. If you can provide a couple examples step by step as well thanks.

Ian H.

Derivatives are strange. There are many rules and they cover many chapters in a textbook. There is a difference between how you are taught to do derivatives with a formula and how people usually do them by shortcuts and memorization. The best thing I can do for you without scheduling a lesson is to tell you some shortcuts (this is no substitute for learning the rules and formulas but it could help you if you're stuck on a problem). For polynomials, you take the exponent, multiply the variable by that exponent, and raise the variable to the original exponent minus 1. For example, d/dx(x^3+2x^2+6x+9) = 3x^2+4x+6. Important to note that the derivative of a constant is 0. Trig functions are trickier. The easy ones are sin and cos. D/dx(sinx)=cosx and d/dx(cosx)=-sinx. If the variable inside of the sin or cos is more complicated, there are rules for that and I dont have the space to explain it here. There are many rules you might want to look up like product rule and quotient rule. Without a lesson, I can't explain it better than this. I hope it helps and good luck.
