Why does pokemon fans think digimon is a rip off of pokemon? It's not a rip off!

I can say I completely agree and am well aware it is not a rip off of pokemon. I think especially for United States fans, the timing of both anime and video game for pokemon coming out before digimon on top of being popular was a large reason why people felt this way. I think largely because both have "Mon" in their name being a huge reason. It's funny really because Digimon was intended to be the boy version of the feminine Tamagotchi, and the story/general premise having nothing in common with pokemon outside the "taming" monster category and even then, in Digimon it's more like a "bond" rather than a "Tamer/Beast" relationship.
