What is the word used to describe items in the background of your vision?

In a movie we view the action through the lease of the camera. We watch the main actor, but see a person walking by in the background , maybe a car passing in the street, or people dining past the actors shoulder. So what is the word to describe things that are occurring in the background of our own focus? I’ve heard of the term before, but have forgotten.
