Convex mirrors shrink reduce the image (always virtual) with respect to the real objects - hence the warning that objects you see in the side view mirror are "closer than they appear". This is because our brain interprets smaller as farther away. Another way to think about it is that convex mirrors allow the observer to see more of the world and are used at obstructed alley entrances and stores.as well.
