Scenario
According to a 2021 Statistic Canada report, in 2019 “62% of Canadian households reduced the amount of organic kitchen waste that was sent to landfills by separating it from their garbage. … Yard waste, such as leaves and grass clippings, is another significant source of organic waste.” BC households had the highest rate at 87%. However, the same report indicates that we still need to do better at reducing our use of single-use plastics, such as plastic straws, bags and bottles. In 2019, “23% of Canadian households used at least one plastic straw” in a typical week. Of those that do, it amounts to “100 plastic straws per person a year”. 1
Given this growing awareness about the environmental impact of our consumer behaviour, you realize that opportunities may exist for your company to make some changes that would make a difference to its environmental impact. You work for Safer Playspaces, a medium sized business that has offices throughout British Columbia (BC). Currently the staff lunchrooms in each and every one of the company's offices still provides staff with plastic plates and they still even use plastic cutlery and cups too, something you would like to see replaced with an environmentally-friendly product. You really wish the company you work for would care about climate change as much as you do. And when they ship their products, office supplies made in BC, to their customers, they really should avoid packaging them in material that will fill up the landfill with toxic plastic. It’s already so polluted with plastic! Now is the time for action. You looked at more than two sites online and you know there are greener packaging products available and the same is true for the plates and plastic used in the lunchrooms. And it would not only make you feel better about the company but you think it would be useful in attracting in more customers that like it too. Your boss may not understand it yet, but it really is a great way to increase customer engagement. Something has to change and you decide to write your boss, Stanley Jones, an email to get this going.
Task:
Write an email message to your boss, Stanley Jones, suggesting that the company research the costs and benefits of making these changes to improve their environmental responsibilities and help deal with the climate crisis. Also, suggest one way the store might let consumers know about the change, and explain how the store would benefit from using it.
