Hi Lizzie! Orwell's writing is known for its political critiques, and his writing often serves as an allegory for current events. For example,1984 is a political satire about totalitarianism. Animal Farm is about the Russian Revolution and communism. In that allegory, animals run a society that mirrors Trotsky's rise and the eventual Russian Revolution. Orwell uses humor, exaggeration, and sarcasm to expose and criticize contemporary politics and other topical issues. His goal was to use his writing to share his political views. Think about how Saturday Night Live does comedy sketches about current events and politicians.
For your answer, find pieces within the text where Orwell uses those techniques to make a more significant point about the issue. Find parallels between the characters or events in the novel and historical events that Orwell critiqued. Then, consider what point he wanted to make through satire and allegory. What does he want the reader to think as a result? Frequently, satire works to prod the readers a certain way.
You may need to do some outside research into the political and social movements happening when Orwell wrote the piece, but that information should be easy to find. I hope that helps!
