1. Two tuning forks are sounded together. One has a frequency of 512 Hz, and the two forks produce 8.00 beats per second when sounded together. What are the possible frequencies of the other fork?

2. Suppose several rubber bands are placed on the 512-Hz-tuning fork mentioned in Question 1 (above this question), reducing its frequency to 508 Hz. This causes the numbers of beats to increase when rhe two tuning forks are sounded together. Determine the frequency of the other fork.

Answer 1

The beat frequency will be the difference between 512Hz and the second frequency. From this the second frequency could be 520Hz (8Hz = 520Hz - 512Hz) or 504Hz (8 = 512 - 504).

If the beat frequency increases when the frequency of the 512Hz fork decreases then the second fork must be at 520Hz.
