How can i make a ratio using both cm and km.

Question

The cm is 11 and 11,000,000 km. Can you turn this into a ratio and explain how you did this as well please? I assume it could be 11 cm : 11,000,000 but i'm not quite sure. Please explain its for a mapping task where i had to convert centimeters to kilometers and now i need to place it into a ratio.

Hi Lili--

 

Since the ratio you have is 11 to 11 million, you can divide both numbers by 11 and end up with the ratio of 1: 1,000,000.

 

BUT, you also might want to check your numbers on the rest of the question. What are you mapping? 11 million kilometers (or even 1 kilometer) is a looooong distance--the distance around the earth at the equator, for example, is only about 40,000 km, so if you are mapping something on earth, 11 million might be off.
