asked 01/13/22Whenever work is done, energy is released or consumed?

We need to be careful about what we mean by all these terms. Let's start by looking at a system vs. the environment. If the system does work, it must lower its energy state and/or take in heat energy from the environment.
If I do work lifting a weight and the weight is the system: I am turning work into gravitational potential energy. If I do work pushing a cart on level ground, I turn work into kinetic energy. If I am considered the system, I am using energy from stored chemical energy in food in order to do the work and thereby use some of my energy. Energy does not disappear, it changes form (with work and heat transfer being two important ways for energy to change its form)
