The evolution of the state constitution of Texas from 1845 to the constitution of 1876 had a few changes, as the original one was based off of the constitution of Louisiana. The house of representatives and senators were elected every two years, as well as the governor had the power to appoint state leaders. The changes though came throughout the years most notably in 1861 when they protected slavery and setting slaves free being illegal, this changed in 1866 to allow Texas to rejoin the U.S. after the civil war, but not to end slavery that ended in 1869 when they outlawed it as well as consolidate more power to the Governor, and grant African Americans the right to vote to coincide with the 13th,14th, and 15th amendment. This is why in current times the governor is more powerful then the Texas legislature. The final changes happened in 1876, but it is still amended to this day in addition to correcting the problems with the 1869 constitution.
