Is the word “overconfident” synonymous with the word “ huperephanos?”

Some resources list the word “overweening,” which carries a sense of “overconfident” as synonymous with “huperephanos.” Can it be inferred from this that “overconfident” is synonymous with “huperephanos” or am I making a connection that isn’t there?

Thanks for the answer. Since they are related but not exactly the same would it be safe to say that the difference is a matter of degree?

You are welcome, Cody! I would say it is a matter of context. Would you like me to have a look at the specific passage(s)?

Actually that would be perfect. Romans 1:30 and Mark 7:22 are two really good examples of what I am talking about. Are those texts saying that it is a sin to be overconfident or a sin to be arrogant? In that context it seems like a huge difference between the two. Thanks!!

Definitely both passages consider pride/arrogance as a sin, but furthermore the first passage (1:30) brings both adjectives “proud” and “boastful” next to each other as sins: ΠΡΟΣ ΡΩΜΑΙΟΥΣ 1:30 TGV 1.30 ψιθυριστάς, καταλάλους, θεοστυγεῖς, ὑβριστάς, ὑπερηφάνους, ἀλαζόνας, ἐφευρετὰς κακῶν, γονεῦσιν ἀπειθεῖς, [They are] slanderers, backstabbers, God-haters, insulters, proud, boastful, inventors of evil deeds, disobedient to their parents." (My translation) ----- ΚΑΤΑ ΜΑΡΚΟΝ 7:22 κλοπαί, πλεονεξίαι, πονηρίαι, δόλος, ἀσέλγεια, ὀφθαλμὸς πονηρός, βλασφημία, ὑπερηφανία, ἀφροσύνη· [from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,] thefts, greed, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness; [all these evil things come from within, and defile the man.] (My translation) I hope this is helpful!
