The American system is quite flexible because students can choose the classes they take in middle school, high school and university while in France this is not possible. Depending on the section and class, all students have the same classes from September to July. In France, students have a lot of homework in the evenings and on weekends, but they have a lot more vacation time than in the US. They have two weeks between October and November, two weeks at Christmas, two weeks in February, two weeks in April and two months of vacation starting in July. In France, middle and high school students are with the same students in all their classes which makes it easier to make friends as they spend a lot of time together and eat together. Children in France also play more sports than in the United States because since elementary school children have three hours of physical activity. Tests tend to be more difficult in France because there are no quizzes but rather tests where there is a lot of writing to do and where you have to have memorized the lessons. The teachers also do not allow extra points or the possibility of retaking a failed test, so it is tough. American teachers tend to be generally much more accommodating. On the other hand, in France, studies are free and university costs are very low. It costs about 170 euros per year for a Bachelor's degree and 600 euros per year for a PhD.
