I always tell my students that auditioning is an art that stands alone. There are so many factors that come into play that can make or break your audition. It takes skill to walk into a room and command the attention of every casting director or music director. How you hold yourself. Your facial expressions. The way you communicate with your accompanist.
Did your slate showcase your personality as well as professionalism?
Does my song choice follow the breakdown for the character I'm seeking or is it so unique that it will actually throw off the directors interest?
Did my song cut give the directors enough of my skill set without overdoing it?
If auditioning for a non-theatrical project, does my vocal stand alone or will be it better suited for a chorus casting.
These are all factors that can play a role in getting cast or getting stuck in "call back land", where you always get a call back, but never lock in the deal with getting on that cast list.
