When do you put a comma before or when its adding extra information?

Once people have reached simplicity, they can focus on their connection with nature that will lead them to discover the tao or how the universe works. 

 

note: the defenition of Tao is how the universe works. So "or how the universe works" is adding extra information, so do i need a comma before the or?

A comma should go before the extra information.

For example: The car, with the flat tire is in the garage.

The sentence is fine without the extra information, this is why the extra information is not needed
