If a graph is symmetric about the x axis, then points on one side of the x axis always appear on the other side of the axis. Mathematically, this means that if some point (a,b) is on the graph, then so is (a, -b)- so if (-2, 8) is on the graph then so is (-2, -8).
Hypothetically speaking, if the graph were symmetric about the y-axis, then anything appearing on one side would be mirrored on the other side. In that case, the point corresponding to (-2, 8) would be (2, 8).
