It takes energy to melt a solid. As energy is applied to the solid, the temperature goes up until it reaches the point that the solid starts to melt. At that point, the energy being applied all goes toward melting the solid (so none of it is used to raise the temperature) and consequently the temperature stays constant until the melting process is completed. Then the energy goes back to raising the temperature (now of the liquid).
