Write an equation for a line perpendicular to y=−2x+5 and passing through the point (-2,-3)

i keep getting the answer - 1/5x+1 and it says its wrong... please help

y = -2x + 5 has a slope of -2.

Perpendicular lines have slopes that are negative reciprocals of each other. So, the slope of the new line would be 1/2

 Now, you have a point and a slope; so, use the Point-Slope form for the equation of a line.

y - y₁ = m(x - x₁₎

y +3 = (1/2)(x + 2)

y +3 = (1/2)x + 1

y = (1/2)x + 1-3

y=(1/2)x -2

y=-2x + 5 has slope -2, the coefficient of the x term, when the linear equation is solved for y

a perpendicular line will have slope 1/2. Take -2/1 change the sign and flip it upside down to get +1/2

y=(1/2)x + b is a perpendicular line. Plug in (-2,-3) to solve for b

-3 = (1/2)(-2) + b

-3 = -1 + b

b =-3 +1 = -2

y= (1/2)x -2 is the perpendicular line through the point (-2,-3)
