Finding acceleration and recoil

In WWI Canadian troops were armed with the "Boys Anti tank rifle". If the barrel is 910 mm long and the bullets velocity was 884m/s. The mass of the rifle is 16.3 kg and the mass of the bullet is 61 g. Determine the acceleration and force of the recoil on the rifle the WWI soldier felt.

Assume the bullet accelerates to 884 m/s from rest over a distance of 910 mm.

s = 910 mm = 91 cm = 0.91 m

v² = u² + 2as

s = 0.91, v = 884, u = 0, giving a = 429371 m/s/s

F=ma. m = 16.3 + 0.061 = 16.361 kg

So recoil force = 16.361 x 429371 = 7024938 N
