Its density. Density = Mass/Volume. If mass is more, density is more. If volume is really large, then density becomes less.
An iron nail is denser/heavier than water so it sinks.
But same iron when shaped into a ship, has more volume as it is made hollow, so it becomes less denser than water and floats on water!
