For questions like these you have to work backwards, we know that the area of betsy's rectangular sandbox is 20 sq ft and we know that the equation for area is Length x Width = Area. They also give us the length of the long size of the sandbox (5 feet). If we plug in the numbers we know into the equation it gives us
5 x Width = 20...Solve for Width will give you 4.
Perimeter is the sum of the lengths of the sides (L + L + W + W = Perimeter) , we know that length and width is 5 and 4 so (5 + 5 + 4 + 4 = 18)
Now, we know that the sandbox at the park is twice as long and twice as wide as betsy's so that means the Length = 10 and the Width = 8. So we plug these known numbers into the perimeter equation to give us the perimeter of the sandbox at the park.
Finally, we plug the new known Length = 10 and Width = 8 into the area equation L x W = Area to find the area of the sandbox at the park.
