Was it technically socially acceptable to marry one's kin in oedipus the king?

(Im writing a paper and im trying to figure out if i can compare how it was socially acceptable then and how it isn't now or not)

My understanding is it was not socially acceptable. He didn't know his wife was his mother when he married her. When he found out she killed herself and he gouged out his eyes.
