23 miles = total distance
12 miles jogging
23-12 = 11 miles walking
Usually there's more to the problem though, such as what was their average speed? or when did they finish?
Let's say average walking speed is 5 mph and average jogging speed is 8 mph.
then
distance = rate of speed times time, d=rt
23 = 12 + 11 = 8J + 5W where J= time jogging and W = time walking J/W = 8/5 or J= 8W/5
23 = 8(8W/5) + 5W = 64W/5 + 25W/5 = 89W/5
W = (5/89)23 = about 1.3 hours walking
23= 8J + 5J/8 = 69J/8
J= 23(8)/69 = 2 2/3 hours for jogging
total time = 1.3 + 2.7 = 4 hours to run 23 miles, approximately, given rounding
23 miles in 4 hours = 23/4 = about 5.75 = 5 3/4 mph
