Simplify a word problem

Question

Five people ordered pizzas for x dollars.  Two also ordered salads for $6.  The next two people ordered breadsticks for $5.  Write and simplify an expression showing the total amount of money spent.

Answer 1

Five people ordered pizzas for x dollars each  ==>  they spent 5*x dollars

 

Two ordered salads for $6 each  ==>  they spent 2*6 dollars

 

Two ordered breadsticks for $5 each  ==>  they spent 2*5 dollars

 

So the total amount spent was 

 

5*x + 2*6 + 2*5

 

This simplifies to 5*x + 12 + 10 = 5*x + 22
