A rectangular picture has a width that is three-fourths its length. The picture has an area of 768 square inches. What is the width of the picture?

Area of a rectangle is length times width = LW = 768

Width is 3/4 length so

W = (3/4)L

Substitute that in for W in the first equation and solve for L

L[(3/4)L] = 768

L²(3/4) = 768

L² = 768(4/3) = 1024

L = √1024 = 32

Since W = L(3/4), W = 32(3/4) = 24
