The owner of a movie theater needs to bring in $1400 revenue at each screening in order to stay in business. He sells adult tickets for $10 each and children’s tickets at five dollars each. How much revenue does he earn selling X adult tickets? How much revenue does he earn from selling Y children’s tickets? Write an equation in XNY for the number of tickets he must sell at each screening

Answer 1

10X + 5Y = 1400

divide by 5

2X + Y = 280

if all were adult tickets, he'd need 140 to stay in business

if all were children's tickets, he'd need 280 to stay in business

or any combination such as 100 adult and 80 children tickets

or 50 adult and 180 children tickets
