In scientific notation, you take a number between 1 and 10 and multiply it by 10n. n is the number of places that you move the decimal to make the number between 1 and 10. n is positive if you move the decimal point from the left and n is positive if you move the decimal point from the right.
Move the decimal point one place to the right. You end up with
2.09
Multiply that number by 10n.
2.09 × 10n
You moved the decimal one place from the left to make the number 2.09 n = -1
2.09 × 10-1
