Use the kinematic equation: vf=v0+at
Find the time: vf-v0=at and therefore t=(vf-v0)/a
Substitute the numbers:
t=(40m/s-20m/s)/5m/s2=4 s
For second part (how far did it travel) use another kinematic equation: xf-x0=v0t+at2/2
Substitute numbers using the time found it part 1 (4 seconds):
The distance traveled=xf-x0=(20m/s)*4s+(5*42)/2=80m+40m=120 m
