so you know that y = x - 4
you also know that y = -x+6
so y is equal to x-4 and also to -x+6
y = x-4 = -x+6
now focus on this part:
x-4 = -x+6
so at this point you just have to solve for x.
add 4 on both sides
x - 4 + 4 = -x + 6 + 4
x = -x + 10
now add x on both sides
x + x = -x + x + 10
2x = 10
divide by 2
x = 5
now we know that x = 5! all we have to do is plug this back into either equation to figure out y.
y = x - 4 = 5 - 4 = 1
equivalently,
y = -x+6 = -5+6 = 1
so the solution: x = 5, y = 1
