Math and science made easy - learn from a retired engineer
Let the first number be "x" and the second number be "y" then x + y = 5 or y = 5 - x
The product of x and y is x•y or x(5 - x) or 5x - x2
Foe f(x) = 5x - x2 the vertex is at x = -5/((2)(-1)) = 5/2 and the value is 5(5/2) - (5/2)2 = 25/2 - 25/4 = 25/4 meaning 25/4 is the maximum value of the product of x and y.
