How to figure out maximum profits using profit parabola

The business manager of a 90 unit apartment building is trying to determine the rent to be charged. From past experience with similar buildings, when the rent is set at $400, all units are full. For every $20 increase in rent, one additional unit remain vacant. What rent should be charged for a maximum total revenue? What is the maximum total revenue?

Mathematics Teacher - NCLB Highly Qualified

Carl P.

Hi, I wanted to say, I am a college student and while your formula for a profit parabola is correct the math is not. I would think a person charging $40 an hour for tutoring and marketing himself as NCLB Highly Qualified would make sure he had the right math.
(90-x)(400+20x) = -20x^+1400x+36000 not -20x^2+380x+3600 and the total revenue comes at 35 increases not 9.5.

Next time check your numbers before giving out answers that could cause someone to be wrong.
