"Cask of Amontillado" Questions (PLEASE I NEED THIS ASAP!)


1. How does Poe create suspense leading up to Fortunato’s inevitable death? Cite three examples from the story. Look for parts in the story that evoke excitement, curiosity, confusion. 

2. How does the setting of Carnival help in Fortunato’s fate? How is the setting different on this particular day than any other day? How might the characters act, dress or speak different at this time? 

3. Reread the first paragraph of Chunk 2. How does Poe use irony in this scene? What was going on that night that the narrator knew would lure the servants out for the night if given the chance? Why did the narrator specifically tell his servants that he would be away until the morning?

4. How does the author use verbal irony to enhance the story’s suspense? Locate two examples of verbal irony in the story.

5. What effect does the chosen point of view have on this story? Is the narrator speaking in first or third person? Why is it significant that the reader knows things about Montresor (the narrator) that Fortunato does not? 

7. What is the theme of this story? What message does the author seem to be sending the reader? How does the author reference or build upon this message as the story progresses?

8. What message is the author sending the audience through the imagery of Montresor’s coat of arms? What does it symbolize? What are the key elements of Montresor’s coat of arms? What is significant about each of these elements? Why is it significant that the snake is being crushed?
