A cat chases a mouse across a 0.98 m high table. The mouse steps out of the way, and the cat slides off the table and strikes the floor 2.9 m from the edge of the table. The acceleration of gravity is 9.81 m/s 2 . What was the cat’s speed when it slid off the table? Answer in units of m/s
Let V = speed of cat ( Horizontal )
Vertical speed = 0
The horizontal distance covered = 2.9m
for This motion Speed = distance /time
V = 2.9 / t...... Eq (1)
This time is same as time for free fall from height of 0.98 m
H = 1/2 gt2 as Initial vertical velocity is zero
0.98 =0.5 *9.81*t2
t2 = 0.98/(0.5*9.81)
Get t from here and plug in Eq 1
to get V
