It may be easier for your learning style to remember that you can express a ratio as a fraction and that two ratios set as equal is a proportion problem.
To solve a proportion problem, you can cross-multiply, then divide to solve for the variable.
How many students are there for 2 faculity members?
12/1=x/2
x=24
How many facilty member are there 120 students?
12/1=120/x
12x=120
x=10
How many students are there for 100 faculty members?
12/1=x/100
x=1,200
How many faculty members are there for 5,400 students?
12/1=5,400/x
12x=5,400
x=450
