The masses on the left must be equal to the mass on the right in order for them to be balanced. In addition, the distance from the left corner of the balance to the center of the balance is 50 cm. The distance from the right corner of the balance to the center of the balance is also 50 cm. So
Total mass left = Total mass right
m1 + m2 = m3
50 kg + 30 kg = m3
80 kg = m3
m3 = 80 kg
Question 2
First we need to find the angle that is formed by the ground and the bottom of the ladder.
θ = tan-1(y/x1) for wL
θ = tan-1(y/x2) for wm
Once you find those respective angles, you can use trigonometry and Pythagorean theorem to find your unknowns.
