Acceleration is defined as a change in velocity with time. The change can be in either the magnitude or the direction**. "Positive acceleration" makes more sense if the change is in the magnitude.. Consider a car travelling north at 60 miles/per hour. The driver steps on the gas to pass another car, and the speed increases to 75 miles/hour over a time interval of 10 seconds. The acceleration is the change in velocity divided by the time: The increase in velocity is 15 miles / hour and occurs in 10 seconds, which is 0.0028 hours. The acceleration is then 15/ 0.0028= 5357 miles / hr^2
**speed is the magnitude of the velocity.
