Knowledge, experience and insight from decades of teaching physics.
1st Law is about zero net force.
In the ABSENCE of a net force, velocity remains unchanged.
- How does wearing a seat belt in a car relate to Newton’s first law?
during breaking, seat belt exerts a net force reducing the occupants forward velocity.
- How does the Voyager 1 spacecraft follow Newton’s first law?
It continues to move at constant speed without any of the rockets being deployed.
- How does the “tablecloth trick” exhibit Newton’s first law?
If the cloth is moves sufficiently rapidly, no net force is experienced by the objects and therefore their velocity remains unchanged (@ zero)
