Set W for width and L for length. We have two unknowns, so we need at least two equations.
we know something about the length:
L = 3W + 3 (the length is 3 times the length plus 3 yards
Perimeter = 2W + 2L
406 yards = 2L + 2W
Substitute the equation for L into the preimeter equation:
406 yards = 2*(3W + 3) + 2W
406 yards = 8W + 6
or
8W = 400 yards
W = 50 yards.
Use this in the first equation to get L, length,
L = 3W + 3
L = 3*(50)+3
L = 153 yards
Check the math:
2W + 2L should equal 406 yards.
2*(50) + 2*(153) = 406 yards.
