An example of a function is f(x) = x^2
a function is any relation which when graphed will not have more than one point intersected when a vertical line is drawn anywhere on the graph. There will only be one y value for any x value.
A circle for example is not a function. x^2 + y^2 = 1 is not a function. You can draw vertical lines through it that intersect the circle more than once. There are two y values for just one x value. when x=0, y could be either 1 or -1.
While the parabola, y=x^2 is a function, and it is impossible to draw a vertical line through it and intersect the parabola more than one time
