asked 09/22/20A newspaper carrier has $ in change. He has 2 more quarters than dimes but 5 times as many nickels as quarters. How many coins of each type does he have?
1 Expert Answer
Let's let d = the number of dimes, because it is completely unknown.
Then the number of quarters would be q = d + 2.
Finally, the number of nickels would be n = 5q = 5(d + 2).
Re-read the question that you entered and be sure that you understand that we have said the same thing.
By now you should notice that you did not specify a dollar amount.
Without that information, we can only speculate based on what we do know...
1 dime means 3 quarters and 15 nickels --> $1.60
2 dimes means 4 quarters and 20 nickels --> $2.20
3 dimes means 5 quarters and 25 nickels --> $2.60
etc.
