If we think about literature as a whole, not only of the western world but globally, we see trends that rise and fall through theme, characters, and prose. If you wish to stick to the western world, we can compare three different authors, John Milton, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, and George Orwell. We see three drastically different authors who covered differing subjects including, religion, man and science, and one about man vs society. Each of these authors stories had extremely complex characters that were portrayed in differing ways as well.
