asked 09/11/20Write a linear function relating the distance of the Titanic from New York City and the number of hours traveled. State the domain and range of the function.
At 2:00 p.m. on April 11, 1912, the Titanic left Cobh, Ireland, on her voyage to New York City. At 11:00 p.m. on April 14, 1912 the Titanic struck an iceberg and sank, having covered only about 2100 miles of the approximately 3400-mile trip. I have already figured the number of hours and the average speed in miles per hour.
Total number of hours: 72+9+2/3=245/3
Average speed: 2100 ÷ 245/3=180/7 mph

For the hours : 2 pm 4/11 to 2 pm 4/14 is 3 x 24 = 72, 2 pm 4/14 to 11 pm 4/14 is 9 hours, so total 72 + 9 = 81. (not sure where your 2/3 comes from).
Average speed 2100 / 81 = 700/3 mph
Distance = speed x time
Distance travelled = (700/3) time [ that's your linear function ]
Domain is [0, 81] because it started at time 0, and sank at t = 81.
Range is [0 , 2100 ] because it started at distance 0 and sank at 2100 miles
