precal question

It is estimated that the annual cost of driving a certain new car is given by the formula

C = 0.36m + 2900

where m represents the number of miles driven per year and C is the cost in dollars. Jane has purchased such a car and decides to budget between $7220 and $8660 for next year's driving costs. What is the corresponding range of miles that she can drive her new car? (Enter your answer using interval notation.)

thank you!, how would that look like in interval notation?

Hi, Viviana, I believe the small diagram at the bottom of my post shows interval notation. I couldn't post the original, larger, diagram because it exceeded the space allowed. It is a line stretching to the right from "0," and marked at the 12,000 and 16,000 points. A right arrow from the 12,000 point and a left arrow from the 16,000 point show the range from 12,000 to 16,000 as the range of possible answers (miles driven). The best I can do with my keyboard is: ================================================= I The range of possible miles I 0 --------------I>----------------------------------------<I----- 12,000 16,000 miles (Not to scale) Bob

I believe another way to denote interval notation is to use brackets and parentheses. The interval covered here is from 12,000 to 16,000 miles. That could be represented as [12,000, 16,000]. The brackets signify that both values are included in the set. If, for example, the 16,000 was just a tad too big (e.g., she goes over budget that last 0.1 mile), the notation would be [12,000, 16,000). The final parenthesis signifies that the exact value of 16,000 is not included, but everything less than that (until 12,000) is included. The term (12,000, 16,000) means that everything between, but not including the two numbers, is included.
