Ah, the famous Gatsby "green light." Truth be told, this ambiguous symbol allows you to impose your own, informed and interpretive meaning onto this light.
For many, however, this green light represents Gatsby's hope for the future. Because of the novel's themes of class, wealth, and class mobility, combined with the placement of this light on Daisy's dock, many postulate that the light is specifically symbolic of Gatsby's desire for wealth and status in the future. Much of this is connected to the idea of the American Dream -- the notion that anyone in this country, with enough hard work, can pull themselves up by their bootstraps and rise in society. The American Dream, in my opinion, is inherently connected to the accumulation of wealth. Therefore, many also suggest that the green light is representative of the generalized ideal of this Dream. There is further evidence for this as many scholars argue that Gatsby's romantic pursuit of Daisy is, in essence, almost allegorical for the American Dream in and of itself - the pursuit of wealth is literalized through Daisy as the emblem of wealth and status.
I hope this helps!
