Speed/current word problem

Len is planning a three hour trip down the river and back to his starting point. He can paddle in still water at 3mi/h and the current is 2mi/hr. How much time can he spend going downstream? How far downstream can he travel?

Vivian L.

distance=speed x time
miles=(miles/hour)(hour)
miles=[(3+2)(miles/hour)](3 hours)
15 miles

Your first question is, "How much time can he spend going downstream?"  You answered it by saying, "Len is planning a three hour trip..."

Vivian,
         The 3 hours is down and back altogether, not just 3 hours down.

Hi Arthur!  It has been a long time.
Sorry.  I did not notice that Len's trip is down the river and back.

Hi Vivian,
              Yes, its been a long time. Nice to see that you're back on the site. It's always nice to see a familiar face or a familiar name. Have a nice night and enjoy the snow.
