horizontal surface, such that their center lines are perfectly parallel (figure 3).

Cylinder A has a mass of 10 kg, and cylinder B has a mass of 7.5 kg. At what

speed will the cylinders move after collision for the coefficient of restitution

to be 0.75?

Hello Des, The coefficient of restitution = Relative velocity of separation/ Relative velocity of approach Let after collision each direction is reversed ( as V3 and V4) 0.75 = (V3-V4)/( V1 +V2)= ( v3 -V4)/(3.0+2.5).... Eq 1 (as directions after collision are revered for each mass Using conservation of momentum ) m1V1 - m2V2 = m1v3 +m2 V4................ Eq 2 Plug in values of two masses m1 and m2, and V1 = 3.0 and V2= 2.5 Solve Eq 1 and Eq 2 for V3 and V4
