I have to explain the simile for a summer reading project but I just don't understand the simile..

A simile is a comparison that uses "like" or "as."

A comparison that doesn't use "like" or "as" is a metaphor.

This quotation is a metaphor, not a simile.

This is a really fun story if you take your time and read very carefully. If you read again and try to answer these questions, you will have a good idea how the metaphor works:

1. What is the king like? Is he barbaric or refined?
2. What are the members of his court like? Are they royal or common?
3. What is behind each portal? Is it something good or bad?
4. What is the justice system like in his kingdom? Is it fair or unfair?
5. How are the king, his justice system, his court, and the two doors similar?
