Question

Solve/work out:

 

2x+1

_____=1

x+5

 

I hope this makes sense,i need this by tomorow.

its 2x+1 over x+5 and it equals 1.

I did trial and error and got 4 but i need to work it out properly without trial and error but i don't know how to.

[(2x+1)/(x+5)]=1

 

Multiply by (x+5) on both sides of equation.  We get

 

2x+1= x+5

2x+1-x-5 = 0

x-4=0

x=4

 

We can check this substituting  into equation:

 

[(2(4)+1)/(4+5)]=1

[(8+1)/(9)]=1

9/9=1

1=1

 

Your initial answer is correct.

x+5

 

Multiply both sides by x+5:

 

2x + 1 = x + 5

 

Subtract x from both sides:

 

x + 1 = 5

 

Subtract 1 from both sides:

 

x = 4

 

Check:

(2x+1) / (x+5) = 1

(2*4 + 1) / (5+4)

(8+1)/9

9/9 = 1

1 = 1
